Planning for Differentiation:
1. What should ALL participants UNDERSTAND? {CONCEPT/BIG IDEA}
Also known as the Essential Understandings/STANDARDS
All participants will understand ___________________________________
2. In order to UNDERSTAND, What do ALL participants have to KNOW?
The CONCEPT of _________________________ includes/consists of/is made up of /contains/incorporates/involves/has features of /covers… __, __, __, …
(The Principles/Basics/Elements/Steps/Components/Parts/Ideas/…)
3. What SPECIFIC INFORMATION {KNOWLEDGE, FACTS, DETAILS…} is needed to show the Concept?
This is the ‘material’!!! – The Information (from the Text, Books, Articles, Videos, Speakers, Inside your head, etc…) that shows the concept!
A. What do you need to figure out, or know more about, before you share the materials?
- Additional books/articles, additional experiences, other resources…
B. How will you do this?
- Summarize or synthesize the information? Make a list? Create a metaphor?
C. Where are you going to find what you need?
4. In the end, What do you want ALL learners be able to do? {Objectives/Benchmarks}
Students will __________ (all the Bloom’s verbs for KCAASE!)
A. At what level? At what depth? {Core Indicators}
B. HOW WILL YOU KNOW? {Assessment/Testing/Grading/Evaluation…}
-By looking at them? By observing them? By listening to them? By reading what they put on paper?By looking at something they made? {Product}
-What QUESTIONS do you need to ask to get that ????
How are you going to DO this? This, of course, is the ‘actual’ teaching AND where the various Instructional Strategies related to Differentiation come in!
How can you explain The CONCEPT so ‘they’ get it?
Do you need to tell them?
Do you need to show them the parts/steps?
Do you need to provide them their own reading material?
Do you need to sum it up for them?
Do you need to show them the end result and explain how you got it?
Do you need them to experience it and then explain it?
Do you need to have them work through it and figure out how it works?
What kind of THINKING (Processing) will help them?
Do they need basic facts?
Do they need the Big Picture?
Do they need to analyze each part/piece/step?
Do they need to summarize it and pull it together?
Do they need to evaluate it and decide what is most important or least important?
Do they need to come up with their own ideas?
